Sandown Guineas Wagering Tips
Races like the Gr3 Carbine Club Stakes at Flemington on Derby day are the ideal lead-up to this race as it is run over the same distance as this race, and and 3yo gallopers who finish strongly in that race are always well suited to this event. Lunar Rise (2nd in 2012) defeated Tatra (2012) to win the Carbine Club Stakes before they again ran the quinella in this event, with Tatra reversing the result in the Sandown Guineas.
The long Sandown straight has a tough uphill run home and suits strong three-year-olds who can run a very solid mile. Any horses with weaknesses seeing out the trip will quite often be found out in the run to the line.

2012 Sandown Guineas Results:
Tatra went into the race as one of the favourites, with Lunar Rise and Proverb also fancied by the punters. As the race progressed, Tatra was nicely positioned just off the speed with his two big threats in Lunar Rise and Proverb parked beyond midfield. At the 500 metre mark, jockey Kerrin McEvoy made a move on Tatra, getting into the clear and then increasing the tempo further at the 300, going to the lead and waiting for the challengers to come. Lunar Rise and Proverb both rattled home, making ground with every stride, but Tatra had done enough, holding on to claim a narrow win in what was a blanket finish.
Place | Horse | Trainer | Jockey | Odds |
1 | Tatra | Peter Snowden | Kerrin McEvoy | $5.50 |

About the Sandown Guineas
The Sandown Guineas is a Melbourne Racing Club Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race for three year olds at set weights run over a distance of 1600 metres (1 mile) at Sandown Racecourse, Melbourne in November.
History of the Sandown Guineas
The race was first run in 1957 as a 3yr old filly’s race until 1967. It was then open to males and females and over the years has seen some very famous horses go on to great racing careers. The 1st race was won by Orient who went on to win the Queensland Oaks. She was a descendant of Spearmint, winner of the Epsom Derby and son of our superstar Carbine. Twilight Glow 1959 (also from Spearmint) won the 1961 Williamstown Plate (now known as the Sandown Classic). Light Fingers, trained by the legendary Bart Cummings, won the race in 1964 as well as the ’64 VRC Oaks, Edward Manifold and Wakeful Stakes, the 1965 AJC Oaks, Kewney Stakes, Princess Handicap, Craiglee and Melbourne Cup and the 1966 Sandown Cup and VATC Cup before a gallant 2nd to Tobin Bronze in the Melbourne Cup to round out the year.
