The BC Juvenile Fillies Turf History
The Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf is a $1 million race that brings together the best 2-year-old female turf horses from North America and overseas for a 1 mile test on the grass course.
The Juvenile Fillies Turf was added to the Breeders’ Cup World Championships in 2008, and in the nine runnings of the race, the post-time favorite has won just once.
The 2014 winner at Santa Anita was a very special filly named Lady Eli, who caught the leader in the stretch and pulled away for a nearly 3-length victory at 5-2 odds. Her final time of 1:33.41 is the fastest ever in the Juvenile Fillies Turf. Trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Irad Ortiz, Jr., Brown has been beaming about Lady Eli since she had her first breeze over the track.
After winning the Belmont Oaks on July 4, 2015 for her sixth win in six starts, Lady Eli contracted the deadly disease laminitis after stepping on a nail following her victory in that race. She not only survived, but miraculously returned to racing nearly 14 months later and was a dominate force again.
Lady Eli returned to the Breeders’ Cup in 2016 and finished 2nd by a nose in the Filly & Mare Turf. She’s won 10 of 13 lifetime starts with three runner-up finishes and nearly $3 million in earnings heading into the 2017 Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
The longest shot to win the Juvenile Fillies Turf was 2010 winner More Than Real (13-1) at Churchill Downs.
The most recent Juvenile Fillies Turf winner was New Money Honey (6-1), a Kentucky-bred daughter of Medaglia d’ Oro, who gave Chad Brown his 3rd win in the race along with Lady Eli and 2008 winner Maram. The 2016 win was Brown’s 8th Breeders’ Cup victory overall and jockey Javier Castellano’s 7th Breeders’ Cup victory and first in the Juvenile Fillies Turf.
Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Information
Run over a distance of one mile, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf is one of the newest additions to the two-day event known as the World Championships. Inaugurated in 2008, the race carries a purse of $1 milllion and is open to two-year-old fillies.
As championship turf races tend to do, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf attracts talent from all over the world. All five of the prep races that offer automatic berths through the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series are hosted in different countries. These include the Moyglare Stud Stakes in Ireland, Natalma Stakes in Canada, Rockefel Stakes in England, Prix Marcel Boussac in France and the Jessamine Stakes in the United States.
Coincidentally, no horse that has won entry in to the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf via the designated prep races has actually won the event itself.
While no ownership group, or jockey, has won the race multiple times, trainer Chad Brown has won the race three times clinching the winningest trainer. Brown won the initial Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf in 2008 with Maram, and then repeated the effort with Lady Eli in 2014 and New Money Honey in 2016.
The current speed record for the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf was set by Lady Eli in 2014 when she crossed the wire in a time of 1:33.41. In fact, Lady Eli is one of the most recognized champions of this race.
Stephanie’s Kitten won this race in 2011 and would go on to claim the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf in 2015. She is the only horse to score a double by winning both the Juvnile Fillies and Filly & Mare divisions.
Initially run as an ungraded stakes race, the event was upgraded to Grade-II in 2010 and then promoted once again to Grade-I in 2012.
Unlike most of the Breeders’ Cup events, which allow up to 14 starters, the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf is limited to 12 competitors.

2016 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf Results
The 2016 Breeders’ Cup World Championships was held from November 4th through the 5th at the Santa Anita Racetrack in Arcadia, California. It was the 33rd edition of the Breeders’ Cup.
Heading into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf, New Money Honey had only two races under her belt: a second-place maiden special weight finish and a victory in the grade three Miss Grillo Stakes. That inexperience didn’t phase her, nor trainer Chad Brown, as the duo came away victorious at the Breeders’ Cup.
New Money Honey is now two-for-two when it matters, wining her debut stakes race and her debut grade one race. It also gave trainer Brown and owner Bob Edwards confidence that their charge could compete in any type of race, surface or distance be damned.
“I think the sky is the limit,” said Brown. “A mile is as short as she wants to run. I think this filly has an unbelievable future. It’s not out of the question that we give her a spin on the dirt to see how she handles it before the Kentucky Oaks.”
Jockey Javier Castellano stalked the race in fifth early, moved up to fourth in the backstretch, and would eventually take the lead in the last furlong en route to winning the race in a time of 1:34.01.
Castellano and New Money Honey beat runner-up Coasted by half a length. Cavale Doree finished third, 1 ½ lengths behind.
For Castellano, it was his seventh career Breeders’ Cup win. Trainer Brown earned his eighth career Breeders’ Cup win. New Money Honey improved her record to 2-1-0 in three career starts. She paid $15.00, $7.60, and $5.20 across the board for the win. A $2 superfecta was worth $55,942.80.
