History of the Bourbon Stakes

The Bourbon Stakes was inaugurated in 1991 under the name Hopemont Stakes at Keeneland. The original tribute was to Hopemont, the historic Hunt-Morgan House in Lexington. In 2003 the race was renamed the Bourbon County Stakes, referencing the storied region around Lexington known for its thoroughbred farms; by 2005 it had been shortened to Bourbon Stakes, a name that has stuck through various sponsorships. Over the years the race has become a premier turf route for two-year-olds and was elevated from Grade III to Grade II status in 2020, reflecting the consistent strength of its fields.

Throughout its history, the Bourbon has occasionally been shifted from turf to dirt when weather intervenes, but its primary identity remains as a 1 1⁄16-mile turf test. In its modern form it sits firmly within the Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” series, giving the winner an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Record-setting performances and big names are part of its legacy: the time to beat is 1:41.27, set by Andthewinneris in 2022, and among trainers, Todd A. Pletcher has emerged as a dominant force, accumulating multiple wins. In 2025, the Bourbon Stakes again delivered a statement performance, with Final Score powered through a strong finish to take the $400,000 prize and a place in the Juvenile Turf lineup.
