History of the Flying Five Stakes

The Flying Five Stakes was first run in 1983 (having evolved from earlier sprint contests) at Phoenix Park in Ireland, originally held at Listed status. Over time it has moved venues and undergone several status upgrades and changes in entry qualifications. From Phoenix Park it was moved to Leopardstown in 1991, before finally settling at the Curragh in 2002.

Along its trajectory, the race was promoted to Group 3 in 1988, then to Group 2 in 2002. It dropped back to Group 3 in 2004, then regained Group 2 status in 2015. In 2018 it became a Group 1 race—the first in Ireland in its category open to horses aged three and up over five furlongs—cementing its place among Europe’s elite sprint races.
Racing and Sports

The Flying Five has always been a showcase of speed and has produced many notable winners. Horses like Benbaun, who won three times in succession (2005-2007), stand out for consistency. Other major names such as Glass Slippers, Highfield Princess, Romantic Proposal, and Fairyland have used the race as a stepping-stone in their careers. Also notable are leading jockeys and trainers—Michael Kinane has multiple wins; Dermot Weld has been among the trainers with repeated success.

Since becoming part of Irish Champions Weekend, the race’s place on the calendar has grown even more prominent. The mid-September date, the €-level purses, and its Group 1 status now ensure that top sprinters from Ireland, Britain, and beyond target this race both for prestige and for its connection to international sprint contests. As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, the winners of the race automatically qualify for the Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint
