The History of the Metropolitan Handicap

The Metropolitan Handicap, also known as the "Met Mile", is one of the most famous Thoroughbred races in the country outside the Triple Crown and the Breeder's Cup. First run in 1891 at Belmont Park (although currently being held at Saratoga Race Course due to track enhancement work at Belmont), the race has been won by some of the most legendary horses in American racing, including Tom Fool (1953), Native Dancer (1954), Buckpasser (1967), Fappiano (1981), Gulch (1987 & 1988) and Ghostzapper (2005).

 Jockey John Velazquez holds the record for most wins with five (1996, 1999, 2010, 2012, 2014), and John M. Gaver Sr. holds the record for most wins by a trainer with six (1940, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1953, 1963). 

As part of the Breeder's Cup Challenge Series, the winners gain automatic entry into the Breeder's Cup Dirt Mile.
