History of the Nunthorpe Stakes

The Nunthorpe Stakes is a prestigious Group 1 sprint held each August at York Racecourse during the famed Ebor Festival. First staged in 1903 and reestablished in its modern format in 1922, the race takes its name from the Nunthorpe area of York and is contested over a blistering five furlongs (1,006 metres).

What sets the Nunthorpe apart is its rare open eligibility—two-year-olds are permitted to line up against older horses, making it one of the few races in Europe where juveniles can test themselves against the best seasoned sprinters. This dynamic has added intrigue and unpredictability to the event throughout its history.

Over the decades, the Nunthorpe has crowned some of the sport’s most dazzling speedsters. Only two horses have ever managed the remarkable feat of winning three consecutive runnings: Tag End (1928–1930) and Sharpo (1980–1982), whose dominance over the straight course remains legendary.

In more recent years, the race has gained global importance as part of the Breeders’ Cup “Win and You’re In” Challenge Series. Since 2011, the winner has earned an automatic berth into the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, giving the Nunthorpe a pivotal role in shaping the international sprinting scene.
