Queen Anne Stakes Race History
The Queen Anne Stakes is a prestigious Group I flat horse race held annually at Ascot Racecourse in Berkshire, England, dating back to 1840. Named in honor of Queen Anne, who founded Ascot in 1711, the race has long been a hallmark of British flat racing. Originally restricted to older horses and run over longer distances, it evolved into its modern format, a one-mile test for horses aged four and up, cementing its role as the traditional curtain-raiser on Royal Ascot’s opening day.
Renowned for attracting elite international milers, the Queen Anne Stakes has seen a parade of champions, including the brilliant Barathea, winner of the race and 1994 European Horse of the Year, and the iconic French mare Goldikova, who triumphed in 2010 before earning a place in racing’s Hall of Fame. In recent years, stars like Frankel and Baaeed have further elevated its prestige.
Since 2018, the race has also served as a “Win and You’re In” qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Mile, offering the winner an automatic berth to compete on one of racing’s most global stages.
