Takarazuka Kinen Race History

The Takarazuka Kinen is a Grade I flat horse race run each year at the Hanshin Racecourse in Takarazuka, Hyōgo, Japan. Contested at 1 & 3/8th miles and open to all thoroughbreds aged three and up, the race was inaugurated in 1960 and has been won several notable Japanese horses such as Mejiro McQueen (1993), Mayano Top Gun (1996), Grass Wonder (1999), T M Opera O (2000), Deep Impact (2006), and Orfevre (2012). The race is named after the city of Takarazuka, home to the the Hanshin Racecourse.

HIstorically, the Takarazuka Kinen is known to feature some of the most popular horses in the country. Together with the Arima Kinen, the pair of races act as Japan's two "All-Star" races, with a majority of the runners being voted in by racing fans in Japan. Other participants are considered based on the prize money they have won.

As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge series, the winner of the race is automatically entered to compete in the Breeders' Cup Turf.
