History of the Forward Gal Stakes
The Forward Gal Stakes was first run in 1981 at Gulfstream Park and has long been an important early-season test for three year old fillies. Named after Forward Gal, a champion sprinter and Hall of Fame inductee, the race has traditionally been contested at seven furlongs on dirt. Its sprint distance sets it apart from many other Oaks preps and provides an early look at speed-oriented fillies beginning their three year old campaigns.
Over the years, the Forward Gal Stakes has attracted a wide range of talented runners, including several who went on to achieve success at the highest levels of the sport. Notable winners include Rags to Riches, who later captured the Belmont Stakes, and Indian Blessing, a champion sprinter and multiple Grade 1 winner. The race has also produced strong performances from fillies who developed into top contenders later in the season, even if they began their campaigns at shorter distances.
In more recent years, the Forward Gal Stakes has been incorporated into the Road to the Kentucky Oaks, awarding qualifying points toward a spot at Churchill Downs. Its position early on the prep calendar allows trainers to evaluate whether their fillies can transition from sprint distances to longer route races as the spring progresses. This makes the race an important stepping stone in the development of potential Kentucky Oaks contenders.
Today, the Forward Gal Stakes remains a key fixture of the Gulfstream Park winter meet and an early indicator of talent within the three year old filly division.
