History of the Yorkshire Oaks

The Yorkshire Oaks is one of Britain’s most prestigious races for fillies and mares, a Group 1 contest run each August at York Racecourse during the four-day Ebor Festival. First staged in 1849, when the inaugural running was won by Ellen Middleton, the race was originally restricted to three-year-old fillies before being opened to older fillies and mares in 1991. Today it is contested on turf over 1 mile, 3 furlongs and 188 yards (2,385 metres) and frequently brings together leading three-year-olds from the Epsom Oaks with accomplished older mares, making it an important championship test for the division.

Brown Duchess became the first horse to complete the Epsom Oaks–Yorkshire Oaks double in 1861, a feat most recently accomplished by Minnie Hauk in 2025. Only three horses have won the Yorkshire Oaks twice: Only Royale (1993–94), Islington (2002–03) and Enable (2017, 2019). Legendary jockey Fred Archer holds the riding record with eight victories, while Mathew Dawson, Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien share the training record with nine wins apiece. As part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, winners of the race automatically qualify for the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf.
