Louisiana Derby Results

Vicar’s in Trouble nearly swept the three-year-old series of races at Fair Grounds in 2014 that ended in the Louisiana Derby on March 29.

The dark bay colt captured the opening race of the series, the Lecomte, by 6 3/4 lengths before falling short when third behind Intense Holiday in the Risen Star next out.

The duo met back up in the Louisiana Derby, and Vicar’s in Trouble would not be denied again. Taking the lead from the start, he held all rivals at bay when crossing under the wire 3 1/2 lengths the best.

Intense Holiday was the public’s choice off his Risen Star score, but found himself trailing in second at the finish after rating just off the pace in midpack on the backstretch.

Commanding Curve rallied from last to take third over In Trouble, but the latter runner was disqualified and placed behind eventual fifth-placer Albano after bumping him in the stretch. That moved Albano up to fourth.

Flat Gone, King Cyrus, Gold Hawk, Louies Flower and Rise Up completed the order of finish after being sent off at double-digit odds.

The top three in the Louisiana Derby all went on to contest the Kentucky Derby, with Commanding Curve running best when runner-up in that classic contest.
