Fourstardave Handicap Race History
The Fourstardave Handicap is a Grade I race run each year at the Saratoga Race Course in New York. Inaugurated as the Daryl’s Joy Stakes in 1985, the race is contested at 1 mile and is open to horses three-years-old and up.
In 1997, the race was renamed for famed New York horse and two time winner Fourstar Dave, who notched a win at Saratoga each year of his career. Nicknamed “The Sultan of Saratoga”, he is one of three horses with the distinct honor of being buried at the racecourse.
The races past winners feature several notable horses, including:
- Lure (1993) – 2 time Breeders’ Cup Mile winner and Hall of Fame inductee
- Da Hoss (1996) – 2 time Breeders’ Cup Mile winner
- Leroidesanimaux (2005) – 2005 American Champion Male Turf Horse
- Wise Dan (2012 & 2013) – 2 time US Horse of the Year
- World Approval (2017) – 2005 Breeders Cup Mile winner and American Champion Male Turf Horse
Wise Dan (2012 & 2013), Fourstardave (1990 & 1991) and Got Stormy (2019 & 2021) have notched a record two wins at the race. Jockey John R. Velasquez has won the race an impressive nine times, while William I. Mott earned the record for most wins by a trainer with five.
