$50,000 James W. Paul 3/8ths Derby - Round 1 at Palm Beach Kennel Club Wednesday Afternoon February 6, 2013

February 5th, 2013

Races 4, 6, 8, 10, 14 and 15 will feature the first round entrants in this series. With quite a few of the runners switching from sprints to routes, there may be some surprises in these races. Nothing perks up a route runner like a few sprints. Many times, they come back ready to get out earlier and close harder in their next route.

Such is the case in Race 4, where #6 Dave's Hoorah, the 9-5 ML favorite, is coming out of some very fast sprint races. If he can carry his speed into longer races and still have something left in the tank at the end of the race, he should be a contender. #8 JS Vegas Moon, with those good times, looks like a dog that could find the finish line early also.

In Race 6, we have two dogs coming from sprints only: #6 JS Woodchuck and #7 WW Paylessshoes. And #8 TB's Scarlet has had one sprint to freshen her up. #1 Palm City Pamela will probably be the favorite in this race though, with good reason.

WW Kay Star at 5-1 looks like a good bet to me in Race 8. She has good position, very fast times and she's classy. #5 Pat C Hi Lite, a switcher, looks interesting too.

In Race 10, I have to like #8, Verdun. He has class and a 37.84 five races ago from the 1 box. #3 Pat C Enticed likes the inside and is switching from sprints, so she may take the lead early if she can get it.

Race 12 is hard to handicap. #5 Bigjackpot Randy has already proved himself in routes and his recent sprints may have him on his "A" game today. This race is wide open though, so nothing would surprise me.

Race 14 has #2 San Tan Spangled coming off a short layoff which might be all he needs to bring him back to top form. I'll also be watching #5 Preston. He was very impressive in sprints and in a 3/8ths schooling race. He has a very good late kick, if he can stay out of trouble.
