1ST Round 2013 $75,000 World Classic at Mardi Gras Monday January 28, 2013
The action starts in the 3rd race and runs through the 7th at Mardis Gras on Monday's evening program. With dogs like O Ya Pure Country, winner of the He's My Man Classic at Palm Beach just a week ago, it's bound to be an exciting series at the Hollywood, Florida track.
In the 3rd race, #3 O Ya Billy Bob is at 9-5 in the morning line and will probably go off as the favorite. With 15 wins out of 29 races last year, this pup has beaten the best. However, he seems to have hit a patch of trouble lately. He was bumped and came in 6th in his last race and had a 2nd and a 5th before that. Can he regain his winning form and beat the likes of #8 A J Cherie Amour, who has 8 wins and 1 place at MG? She won by 8 lengths from the 8 box before and will be looking to claim midtrack for herself all the way around the oval.
In the 4th, we have #7 Emeraldcityflyer, Futurity Champion. This young hotshot has hit the board in 6 out of 8 of her races this year and is definitely the one to watch in this race. The mystery dog in this race is #5 Mega Rebelde, who has been running at Caliente. How will he do at Mardis Gras? He was blocked in his only schooling race here, so that remains to be seen, but he could surprise.
I think the sleeper is #3 in the Fifth race. Roc A By MSMolly has a turn of speed that has to be seen to be believed. I think she can outbreak the rest in this race and I know she can run just about anywhere on the track and still hit the finish line first. She'll have #1 WW's Wild West and #2 Maliceindapalace to contend with, so let's see if she can get the drop on them.
In the Sixth race, #1 Bella Incubus, has had a short layoff and if his schooling races are any indication, is back in midseason form and liking the change from Southland to Mardis Gras. As the old man of this group, he'll have to show that he still has what it takes to beat the youngsters though. #7 FF Code Red and #8 AH's Anton might make it hard for him to do that.
In the Seventh race, I'm wondering where #8 CT Heartbreaker will run. I've seen her run outside from the 1 box and inside and midtrack from the 8 box at Palm Beach, but I have no idea how she'll take to the outside post at MG. She certainly has the class and the speed to win if she gets the racing luck.
In the Eighth, #8 O Ya Pure Country has some stiff competition, but I think he can get the job done, if he gets the break. Trying to prevent him will be #3 Mo's Real McCoy, who is always very fast out of the box.

Semi-Finals of The Orange Park Derby Also on Monday night, don't miss the semi final of this route race series at Orange Park. In the Seventh, Ninth and Eleventh races, the field of 8 for the final will be determined. A standout in this series is Gs Cosmo, who blistered the track with a 37.10, just 3 tenths of a second off the record set by Gil's Cuero back in 2007.
Gett It Going, Safe At Home and Pat C Abash were also impressive winners of the third round over the 660 course.
In the Seventh race, Safe At Home was lucky enough to get the 1 box and is at 6-5 in the morning line, fitting odds, I'd say, judging by the number of sub-38 second times he has in his last races.
The Ninth race is a tough one to handicap. #1 WSR Hunker Down and #8 Gavotte get my vote for greyhound most likely to cross the line first in this one, but I won't be surprised if there's an upset.
In the Eleventh, #4 Gs Cosmo, is at a surprising 2-1 in the morning line. I think his odds will be a lot lower on the toteboard just before the race goes off. True, there are other good routers in this race, like #2 Pat C Abash, #3 Gs Grace and #7 Bah Bah Booey. And, as we know, anything can happen when 8 greyhounds rocket around the track at high speeds, all intent on being first to catch the lure. But going by what he's done so far in this series, my money will be on Gs Cosmo to win.
