Harness Race Preview 68th Little Brown Jug 2013 Thursday September 19, 2013
In the 68th running of the Little Brown Jug nineteen pacers will race for a purse of $552,551 in the 13th, 14th and 15th races today at Delaware County Fair. The top 3 horses in each of these races will advance to the 2nd elimination heat. If an elimination winner wins in the 2nd heat, he'll be the Little Brown Jug winner. If no horse does that, there'll be a race-off between the four heat winners for a purse of $110,510.
In Race 13, morning line favorite at 2-1 is Vegas Vacation, one of two entries from trainer, Casie Coleman. Lucan Hanover, her other entry, will start in Race 14. Vegas Vacation will start from the 5 post and is coming off a win in the Simcoe and the Empire Breeder's Classic. He has 7 wins out of 13 races this year and earnings of over $646,000 lifetime. Brian Sears will drive for Coleman.
Other entries in the 13th race include Rockin Amadeus, second in the morning line at 5/2, with Yannick Gingras for Jimmy Takter, who also has 2 entries in the elimination races. The other is Sunfire Blue Chip, the morning line favorite in Race 15. Rockin Amadeus handled the half mile track at Yonkers very well, with a gate to wire trip, so shouldn't have a problem with the half mile track today.
In Race 14, there's one horse that has won a race at this track and it isn't the morning line favorite, Lucan Hanover. It's Beach Memories at 6/1 in the 5 post with Yannick Gingras handling the drive for Brian Brown. Fast to leave and with some good speed figures, Beach Memories might be a sleeper in this race. So might Word Power, the other horse with good speed figures and a close second in his last race.
Lucan Hanover does look formidable though, with 6 wins out of 12 races this year and the competent David Miller driving for Casie Coleman, as I mentioned earlier. Mach It So in the 2 post with Scott Zeron, driver of last year's LBJ runner up, has 8 out of 12 for wins this year and also looms as a threat in this one.
In Race 15 there's also a horse that has won here before and, again, it's not the favorite, Sunfire Blue Chip at 2/1. It's Twilight Bonfire in the 1 post, the second favorite at 5/2. Driven by John Campbell for Danny Collins, this Tioga based colt could take advantage of the 1 post and outdo his recent performances.
Sunfire Blue Chip may not take to the half mile track. He struggled at Yonkers awhile back. If he doesn't fire in this race, Resistance Futile and Johny Rock are two that could grab a chance to get a piece of the pie. A question mark here is Odds On Equuleus, coming back from a layoff after lackluster showings in August. Is he ready to show what he impressed us with back when he was tearing up the track? If so, this could be a very interesting and contentious race.
Other races on today's program include the Old Oaken Bucket for 3 Year Old Colt Trotters 1st Division in the 4th race with Vibe Blue Chip listed as the morning line favorite; Old Oaken Bucket for 3 Year Old Trotters 2nd Division in the 6th race where Spider Blue Chip is at morning line odds of 9/5. The 10th Race is the Miss Versatility Trot Final with D'Orsay the morning line favorite at 2/1 and stablemate Maven at 3/1.
The Winbak Pace in Race 11 has Pet Rock with David Miller for Virgil Morgan at 9/5. A Rocknroll Dance will be gunning for him at 2/1 with Rockin Finish and Our Lucky Chip trying for a surprise.
