Buffalo Bills Team History

It’s hard to picture the Buffalo Bills without thinking of their four straight AFC championships that ended in Super Bowl losses. While this member of the 1970 merger between the American Football League and the National Football League managed to appear in four straight Super Bowls they also managed to hold the NFL’s longest streak for seasons without a playoff appearance between 1999 and 2017. The Bills were the last major American professional sports team to compete in the playoffs in the 21st Century.
Needless to say, Buffalo doesn’t hold a lot of records that are worthy of praise. In the same realm as four straight Super Bowls with no victory is the other most notable part of the Bills franchise: In 1969 the Buffalo Bills drafted OJ Simpson after going 1-12-1 in 1968. Simpson demanded the Bills award him the largest professional sports contract in history at the time with a value of $650,000 over five years. If they didn’t award him his deal he was ready to unpack his bags and stay in sunny California to become an actor.
The Bills took his threats seriously and managed to work out the largest deal for any athlete at the time. In his first three years with the Bills, OJ Simpson struggled but in 1973 The Juice broke Jim Brown’s single-season rushing record of 1,863 yards. Simpson had a notable season in 1975 leading the league in rushing yards, but in 1977 he had his season cut short by an injury and before the 1978 season he had been traded to the San Francisco 49ers.
The Buffalo Bills are still looking to turn the corner and are struggling to do so. Even with a dedicated fan base and being the only team to play its home games in the state of New York the Bills need to find a way to get things heading in the right direction. The Bills finished 9-7 SU and 9-6-1 ATS last year in what was a promising campaign, but are hinging their hopes on developmental rookie quarterback Josh Allen from Wyoming moving forward.
