Houston Texans Team History

In 1997 the Houston Oilers left the Lone Star State and headed to Music City when they relocated and became the Tennessee Titans. After attempting to bring an expansion NHL team to the city, Bob McNair found himself lobbying for the NFL’s 32^nd franchise in the latest expansion. As sure as McNair was that the city of Houston needed professional football, the NFL was right there with him, awarding the city a new NFL franchise in 1999. With a new team named after the legacy Dallas Texans, Houston found itself in the mix of a competitive division that included its former franchise in the Titans.

Houston played its first NFL game in 2002 when they defeated the Dallas Cowboys becoming the second-ever NFL expansion franchise to win its opening game. The team had moderate success, but was not able to take the leap to become the successful pro football team Bob McNair imagined when funding the team in 1999. In 2011 the Texans drafted Wisconsin star defensive end, JJ Watt, and went on to win their first-ever AFC South title the following season. In 2012, Houston brought home its second AFC South title, but yet another early loss in the AFC playoffs. The following draft brought in star wide receiver from Clemson, Deandre Hopkins. Unfortunately, he joined a squad that proceeded to go 2-14 the next season before firing their coach.

The 2017 draft proved very critical for the franchise when they acquired another Clemson star in quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson made what some consider the most impressive rookie QB debut in recent history going 3-3 with very impressive stat lines, but his season was cut short with a torn ACL. The pending health of Watson is not only a serious concern for Houston, but a major talking point when analyzing the potential landscape of a much improved AFC South division. The 2018 season will show us the resilience of a city hit by more than just injuries as of late.
