Jacksonville Jaguars Team History

The Jaguars origin lies in the prospective ownership group Touchdown Jacksonville!, which consisted of future governor Jeb Bush and a group of other financial moguls. Having one of the smaller TV markets of the prospective NFL expansion cities, Jacksonville was put on the back burner of the NFL expansion plans while Charlotte and St. Louis were considered heavy favorites for new teams in 1994. However, in a surprise move the NFL owners voted to provide the city of Jacksonville with its very own NFL franchise.

Tom Coughlin was selected as the team’s very first head coach and stayed with the franchise for the team’s first eight seasons. Starting in 1995 the Jaguars finished their inaugural season with a 4-12 record yet still breaking the NFL record, which was a record at the time for wins by an expansion squad. This inaugural team included future Hall of Fame lineman Tony Boselli and franchise cornerstone players in quarterback Mark Brunell, running back James Stewart, and wide receiver Jimmy Smith. The initial season consisted of wins against the Oilers, Steelers, and a sweep of the Cleveland Browns.

The 1996 campaign was the Jaguars’ miracle season as they finished with a record of 9-7. They made their way into the AFC playoffs and even managed to win the early rounds before finding themselves in the AFC Championship game against the New England Patriots. Their season ended with a 20-6 loss to the Patriots in Foxboro. 1997 took the Jaguars back to the playoffs, but they were unable to repeat the playoff success and they lost their first round playoff game. The 1998 Jaguars would reach the playoffs yet again but fall short midway through, while the 1999 team won a franchise best 14 games before losing to the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship game.

Coughlin and the Jaguars wouldn't sniff the players together again for years, and in 2003 the team installed Jack del Rio as their new head coach. During del Rio's tenure from 2003-2011, the team had uneven success with two forgettable playoff appearances early on. They failed to strike a winning season from 2008-2016 before the arrival of head coach Doug Marrone.

After a banner 2017 season where they went 10-6 SU and 9-7 ATS. The would make it all the way to the AFC Championship game after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs. They went into halftime against the New England Patriots winning by a large margin in the AFC Championship, but managed to let the game slip away losing 24-20, placing the Patriots back in the Super Bowl. With a group of young, talented players in the backfield and on defense the Jaguars hope to return to the AFC Championship and come away victorious.
