New York Giants Team History

The New York Giants franchise was established in 1925 after previous owner Tim Mara invested $500 in the team. The Giants enjoyed a period of great success from 1925 to 1963 winning four NFL Championships and appearing in the NFL Championship game fourteen times. In 1958 the Giants were involved in one of the most important games ever played when they faced the Baltimore Colts in what would eventually be nicknamed “The Greatest Game Ever Played”. The Giants would eventually lose in overtime, but the game marked the beginning of the NFL’s prominence in the American sports market. After 1963 the team went through its worst sustained period in franchise history, recording only two winning seasons and zero playoff appearances over the next 14 seasons. It was not until 1980 that the Giants would become a contender once again, eventually winning the Super Bowl four times in 1986, 1990, 2007, and 2011.

The Giants franchise has seen a plethora of Hall of Fame players over the years including Steve Owen, Mel Hein, Roosevelt Brown, and Michael Strahan who would anchor the defense that defeated the unbeaten New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants have also had three coaches elected to the Hall of Fame including Bill Parcells, who would coach the Giants to their first two Super Bowl titles in 1986 and 1990.

The Giants have enjoyed success in the modern NFL era as well, winning two Super Bowls in 2007 and 2011 under Head Coach Tom Coughlin, who was hired in one of the more pivotal off-seasons in franchise history. During the 2004 draft the Giants were able to broker a trade on draft day for Quarterback Eli Manning from the Chargers. Manning would go on to have a stellar career with the Giants making four Pro-Bowls while also being named Super Bowl MVP twice in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI, where he upset the New England Patriots both times. Coughlin eventually stepped down as Head Coach of the Giants in 2016 leading to the hiring of Head Coach Ben McAdoo. McAdoo was fired midway through the 2017 season that saw the Giants go 3-13 SU and 7-9 ATS.

In 2018 the Giants hired General Manager Dave Gettleman and Head Coach Pat Schurmur to their current positions, and drafted running back phenom Saquon Barkley second overall in the 2018 NFL Draft.
