San Francisco 49ers History

The San Francisco 49ers were founded in 1946 as one of the founding members of the All-America Football Conference, and joined the NFL when the leagues merged. After calling Kezar Stadium and Candlestick Park home up until 2007, the team moved in to the modern confines of Levi Stadium in Santa Clara. As one of the most storied and well-known franchises in the world, the San Francisco 49ers are valued at just over $3 billion, the 10th highest price of any sports franchise in the world.
By far the most notable era in the history of the team came when head coach Bill Walsh was brought ton steer the team in the summer of 1978. Walsh drafted Joe Montana out of Notre Dame to command his West Coast offense, and the rest is history. Alongside Jerry Rice, Dwight Clark, Ronnie Lott, and many others, Montana first defeated the Bengals in Super Bowl XVI (1982) and then out gunned a previously unstoppable Dan Marino in Super Bowl XIX (1984). Returning to the big game in 1989, Montana erased the struggles of an uneven regular season to dominate Super Bowl XXIII with Jerry Rice catching an unreal 11 catches for 215 yards and a touchdown. That summer, Walsh would retire with George Seiffert named as his successor.
Montana would win MVP during the 1989 campaign and then charge in to the playoffs where the team would explode in their final games, dusting the Los Angeles Rams 30-3 prior to eviscerating the Denver Broncos 55-10 to claim the team's fourth Super Bowl. This was the only occasion where a team was able to win back-to-back Super Bowls under two different coaches. A failed bid for a three-peat was thwarted by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XXV. Steve Young would rise to unseat Montana as the future of the franchise, and pilot the 49ers to a win in Super Bowl XXIV (1994), famously giving the "thumbs up" for the team's fifth championship.
Through a tumultuous series of ups and downs after the turn of the century, head coach Jim Harbaugh led a revolutionary 49ers team to the Super Bowl in 2012, where the franchise suffered their first and only defeat in a championship game. Since then, the team has been mired in mediocrity but will attempt to turn the tide after trading for Jim Garrapolo midway through the 2017 season. Expectations for the San Francisco 49ers have never been higher since Steve Young retired.
