Tennessee Titans History
When fans essentially stopped supporting the Houston Oilers in their native city, the team was relocated to Tennessee in 1997 where they evolved in to the Titans in 1999 under planned expansion. The name is a hat tip to the nickname of Nashville, which is known in some circles as "The Athens of the South". The team is currently worth around $2 billion.The name change had an immediate impact as the team rode the efforts of Steve McNair, running back Eddie George and a powerful defense led by Jevon Kearse to Super Bowl XXIV where they would lose a tight game against the St. Louis Rams. This was one of the most entertaining championship games ever played in the sport. The team continued to enjoy success with this group, and made the playoffs two more times with McNair winning the co-MVP in the 2003 season alongside Peyton Manning.
A number of high profile players have matriculated through the Titans, including Heisman winner Vince Young and former Offensive Player of the Year Chris Johnson. However, a recent recalibration of the team under new head coach Mike Vrabel has reset expectations. With a young nucleus centered around Marcus Mariota and Derrick Henry, the Titans look to improve on their franchise altering 9-7 SU and 8-7-1 ATS run through the 2017 season which brought them their first playoff victory in 15 years.
