Pick 4 Preview: Gulfstream Park – Tuesday, June 25, 2013

June 25th, 2013

Special live racing on Tuesday at Gulfstream Park, the preview day of the summer meet at the track, which begins on July 1.  Eight races on the Tuesday card and the late pick-4 looks like an excellent play.

The first leg of the pick-4 is race five, a low level claiming race for fillies and mares at six furlongs on the main track.  Dakota Eyes is the 3-1 morning line favorite tumbling down in class after finishing fourth against tougher.  She makes her second start off the layoff and is the filly to beat.  The only filly with a win over the track is Blackstone, a 12-1 long shot.

Palantine Hill is going to be the favorite for race eight, but is making his first start since mid-November and is winless in four starts at Gulfstream.  The odds are based on his connections, who seemingly win everything in south Florida.  Flyin Trey should be setting the pace from post three and Angel’s Sea is the threat from the pack of the pack.  Angel’s Sea is a nice 6-1 on the morning line and has three wins and two seconds from seven starts over the track including two-for-two at the distance.

The feature seventh race is an allowance optional claimer for three-year-olds and upward at six and one-half furlongs on the main track.  Again we have a Frank Calabrese-owned, Kirk Ziadie-trained favorite with the entry of Runyon Humor and Musical Flair and again we have a vulnerable favorite.  Ecabroni, Buzz the Deputy, Gloton and Coosada all have races on their resume that would be good enough to win this race. The question is whether to spread deep or pick one and single.

There should be plenty of speed in the finale, which will set the race up perfectly for the Peter Walder-trained Saratoga Blitz.  The six-year-old mare is coming off an easy win at one level lower and has won at Gulfstream in the past.  Earlier this year Saratoga Blitz won back-to-back races over the track while in the barn of Patricia Farro.  Darlin’ Diane is another closer, but may be better on the turf or synthetics.  Daddys Jewel and E Sveikata will be setting the early tempo in the one-mile race.

First post at Gulfstream on Tuesday is 12:50 pm ET with race five scheduled to break from the gate at 2:38.
