Pick 5 Betting Preview: Santa Anita $891,813 Carryover - November 2, 2013
No one hit the pick-5 on Friday at Santa Anita creating a carryover into the Saturday card of just under $900,000. The sequence starts with the opener, the Juvenile Turf Sprint, and ends with the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and Filly & Mare Turf. Let's take a look.
Love In The Desert is the likely favorite for the Juvenile Turf Sprint down the hill as he is making his first U.S. start after a campaign in England this summer. The Euros absolutely toyed with the U.S.-based runners on the turf on Friday and Love In The Desert can keep that trend going. Others to consider are Richies Party Girl, Dothraki and Toowindytohaulrox.
Most players who put together a ticket are going to single Flashback in race two, the Damascus Stakes, as he is the class of the field. There are only five horses in the race, so the rail draw will not be a problem. Some concerns for the favorite will be the layoff, Baffert has won with one of his last 10 starters off of greater than 180 days, and that Anillo is a fast horse that has been working very well in the mornings and will be positioned in front of the favorite early. Bigger tickets will use both and may even hit the "all" button.
Race three is the Senator Ken Maddy, a Grade 3 sprint on the downhill turf course for fillies and mares. This race is wide open with Purim's Dancer, Winding Way, Sky High Gal, Judy In Disguise, Ultrasonic, Minds Eyes, Camryn Kate, Unusual Hottie, A Time to Love, Qiaona and Pontchatrain all having a shot to win. Either use a couple or go very deep.
We touched on the Juvenile fillies earlier this week, but with the track playing the way it did on Friday, upgrade the chances of Scandalous Act and She's a Tiger. Rosalind and the favorite Sweet Reason will not be aided by the speed bias and will be up against it. Untapable is the fourth pick for trainer Steve Asmussen and jockey Rosie Napravnik.
It's the Euros world, we are just living in it. Dank and Romantica can keep up the domination in the Filly and Mare Turf, which ends the pick-5. If Dank runs the same race she did in the Beverly D, it's over, but Romantica is a must use for Andre Fabre. Tiz Flirtatious looks best of the U.S. hopes while Laughing is projected to get an easy lead as lone speed. Marketing Mix has run races in the past that would be good enough to win, but gut feeling is she is not as good as the top choices. Qushchi is the bomber with Alterite, Emollient and Kitten's Dumplings three good three-year-olds. They may be rounding out the superfecta.
