Pick 5 Preview: Santa Anita $226,901 Carryover - March 1, 2013
Based on last out speed figures, race one is between the three horses drawn in posts one, two and three. One World drops in class, but must catch Valentine Boy. Broadway Nika jumps up in claiming price; however, she was facing multi-race winners in her last couple and this race is for non-winners of two lifetime.
Six furlongs could be the best distance for Wild Media, but he can race gate to wire as the controlling speed in race 2. Caveman Keno is a debut runner for Bob Baffert, an angle that must be respected at all times. Oliver's Tale and Incline Village also fit in this maiden race. Candy's Jewel may be ranked too low and could very well win in his second start off the layoff, but we are not using him based on cost.
One more time for Grand Giant as he appears to be lone speed on the turf in race three. Most of the others all look the same and the biggest threat, Joelito, already scratched out of the race. Grand Giant is the single.
Race four is not easy, seven of the nine runners are single digit odds and all have a shot to win. Deep pockets could use all here, but we will use Rossi Reserve, Latin Lashes, Memo to Kathy and Roll Your Eyes.
Ten maiden fillies and mares run down the hill in race five with most eyes on Patriot C H, the first-time-starter for trainer Carla Gaines, and Puff Pastry, who is winless in ten starts. Sidepocket Run is expected to improve off her debut while Tickle Again could be a sneaky long shot play. Her jockey, Martin Pedroza, was probably the reason for the carryover in the first place, winning race five on Thursday with a 28-1 shot.
