Pick 6 Betting Preview: Santa Anita $430,034 Carryover – October 14, 2013
A 75-1 shot in the last race on Sunday won, creating a two-day carryover of over $430,000 into the Columbus Day card at Santa Anita. With 10 races on the day the pick-6 starts in race 5; let’s take a look.
On paper, this race is a tough way to start the sequence and most big tickets may just opt to use all. The wide open field of Cal-bred turf maidens is led by morning line favorite Sidepocket Run, a four-year-old that is winless in 10 career starts. Budget minded tickets may opt to use her, St. Malo’s Gate and Keldy, but contention runs deep. Crystalline Indy is 8-1 on the morning line and drew post one for her first start around two turns, she is the upsetter.
Final Step is going to be tough in race six coming off his second place finish at Del Mar in September. The In Summation gelding puts the blinkers on for his second career start and has been working well in the mornings. Big Medicine Man, Maximinus and first-time-starters Enterprising and Ke in Motion look the danger.
Back on the turf for race seven, this time for three-year-old claimers that have never won two races. Ransom Canyon and Copper Bay are the ones to beat if they can overcome their outside posts. Copper Bay had a difficult trip 10 days ago and would not have to improve by much to get the win for the trainer/jockey team of Mike Mitchell and Julien Leparoux.
Race eight is a low level claiming race for three-year-olds and upward going five and one-half furlongs on the main track. Hodge came back off a seven month layoff and finished a good third when he could not be claimed last month at Barretts and is the one to beat. He is likely to be on the pace along and could just run them off their feet. He’s a Sure Call, Cunning Ride, Fighting On and The Gatekeeper will be chasing.
Big Bane Theory is 3-1 on the morning line for race nine and likely to go lower. The son of Artie Schiller has two wins in seven starts and is coming off a neck defeat when he had to steady back in August at Del Mar. Post one with the rails out at 15 feet will help. The pace scenario is a little cloudy as there only appears to be one speed horse on paper, Lucky Primo. Hawk’s Eyes and Mambo Man rate an outside look, but the race goes through Big Bane Theory.
Another maiden claiming race to end the card and everyone is live. On form; Winninginfashion, Frannie’sspirittoo and Glad’s Gal are the three to focus on. Roust ‘Em Bertie takes a huge drop from maiden special weight races, but trainer Mike Puype has only one win with 27 starters this meet, perhaps he is due. U R My Candy Girl looms the upsetter.
