Pick 6 Betting Preview: Del Mar - $189,822 Carryover - August 18, 2013
With one race to go on the Saturday card no one is alive in the pick-6, creating a carryover of almost $190,000 for the Sunday card. The sequence covers races five through ten and includes the $150,000 Solana Beach Handicap.
Race five is an allowance, optional claiming race for three-year-olds and upward going a mile on the turf course. Tom's Tribute is the morning line betting favorite for the race and is the horse to beat. He ran very well in defeat in his last and the horse that finished in front of him, Bio Pro, came back to run a good fourth on Saturday. Also coming out of that same race are Somethings Unusual, third, My Samurai Warrio, fourth, Mambo Man, fifth, and Motown Men, eighth. Te Rapa loves the Del Mar turf course while Kid Dreams also rates a look for trainer Neil Drysdale.
Gnarly Dude looks like a good bet in race six dropping back to the level at which he was claimed two starts back. The five-year-old gelding set the early pace in his last before fading to finish fifth. He has finished in front of many of these and will be tough to catch. If the pace is fast, Dress Code is the one to back. The son of Doneraile Court finished two and one-quarter lengths behind Gnarly Dude two starts back in a race at Hollywood Park. Let's Get Crackin is likely to improve off his comeback race two weeks ago and is 5-1 on the morning line.
Race seven, the start of the pick-4, is a maiden special weight race for two-year-old fillies with nine of the ten making their first career start. The workout report will be key, but we will focus on La Quintessa for trainer Bob Baffert. The Unbridled's Song filly is out of Grade 1 winner Madcap Escapade, who was a debut winner in 2004 at Gulfstream Park, making her a half to Mi Sueno, who won the Grade 3 Sorrento and Grade 1 Debutante at Del Mar in 2009. Others to consider are Belle of the Fleet, On the Right Side, Sunset Strip, Spring Again, Bosserette and Wild Caroline.
Unusual Hottie and Halo Dolly are hard to separate in the Solana Beach. Unusual Hottie is a neck away from winning four straight while Halo Dolly won this race last year. Second in the race? Unusual Hottie. These are the only two with stakes experience as the others are stepping up from allowance races. If you can use both on the pick-6 or pick one and split them as singles on the pick-6 and pick-4.
With one more move forward, Tamarando is the most likely winner in race nine, a maiden special weight race for California-bred or sired two-year-olds. Takem by Surprise and Johns Journey will keep the pace honest up front while Tribalist looks to have some sneaky good works for his debut.
Christophe Clement made his presence felt on Saturday when he sent out Discreet Marq to a tour-de-force in the Grade 1 Del Mar Oaks and he again holds the aces in the tenth race on Sunday with Red Vine. The Candy Ride colt was second in his last race at Saratoga and gets over a turf course that will play well to his late-running style. The local horses are all the same so it's the stranger danger angle that should take the night cap. Navarre is on the also-eligible list and may be worth including if he draws in. The Dansili colt, bred in Great Britain, has five placings in his nine starts over various tracks in France. Back in March, Navarre was second, beat a neck, behind Nutello, who ran third on Saturday in the Grade 1 Sword Dancer at Saratoga. This spot is obviously easier.
First post on Sunday at Del Mar is 5:05 pm ET with race five scheduled to break from the gate at 7:10.
