The pick-6 once again proved to be too tough for bettors on Sunday leaving a carryover pool of over $265,000 for the Wednesday card. This is not your typical Wednesday with two maiden special weight races, an allowance race for fillies and mares and the Grade 2 Sorrento for two-year-old fillies. We start with $20,000 filly and mare claimers going six and one-half furlongs on the main Polytrack.
Addendum is the 5-2 morning line favorite, but no one would fault a bettor for playing against. The daughter of Lawyer Ron is winless in her last nine starts including the last three for her current trainer Vladimir Cerin. Addendum did break her maiden over the track in August 2012, so she has that going for her. Queen of the Hill looks to be the speed of the speed while Ghost N Your Heart and Metaxa just finished one-two in a four horse field last month at Hollywood Park. Not sure what happened to Sean S, but if she has one more good race in her, she found a good spot to upset on the class drop.
Clenor should have race four over a barrel after finishing third in a Group 3 stakes in June at Curragh in Ireland. The Irish-bred filly is bred to love the stretch out to a flat mile and the switch to two turns. Clenor is 5-2 on the morning line, but is expected to go shorter. Sierra Electrica ran good in her debut to contend and Amy Jane should be in front the first time across the wire.
Pining Play ran seventh in a five-furlong turf sprint won by Conclave, entered in the Sorrento two races later, with Sierra Electrica third and Amy Jane fourth. Too bad we can’t see the results of race four prior to putting in the pick-6 ticket or else Pining Play may be a standout. As it is, Tribal Tattoo is the likely front-runner and Wickedly Sassy is sure to improve off her debut when she was well bet. With the scratching of Lovely Instinct, Slewthatflew drew in from the also-eligible list. She finished third in the race Wickedly Sassy comes out of.
Race six looks to be between Ismene and Minds Eyes and the two could not be any different than they are. Ismene has been favored in five of her six career starts and won three while Minds Eyes has yet to be favored in her six starts and has won two. Ismene is a front runner while Minds Eyes is a closer. Ismene is inside speed on Wednesday, but must deal with Sassy Suances, Tribal Gal and Wednesday, which would be the most appropriate of winners on the card given it’s on a Wednesday.
Race seven is the Sorrento, which we will look at more tomorrow so let’s move on to the eighth race, a state-bred maiden special weight sprint for fillies and mares.
Crystalline Indy scratched and she would have been a long shot play, but without her we will land on Gypsy Friday. By In Excess, Gypsy Friday ran well in her start last month, which came after a layoff of over a year. Suances Pride breaks from post eight and with the blinkers on should show improved speed. Bridle Plan was fourth behind Gypsy Friday and Hanserella last month and is making her second career start. Not an easy way to end the day, but it could be a lucrative one.
Post time for race three and start of the pick-6 is 6:09 pm ET.
