Pick-6 Preview: Gulfstream Park Rainbow 6 $515,499 Carryover – January 23, 2013

The Rainbow Pick-6 carryover at Gulfstream Park has now hit the half-million dollar mark; it’s time to jump into the pool. Let’s take a look at some of the long shot horses in each of the six races as you have to be the only winning ticket to take down the entire pool.

Race five starts off the 10-cent minimum bet and there is a heavy 8-5 morning line favorite in Bristol Dancer.  The gelding son of Speightstown just won his last race and now drops in claiming price first off-the-claim for trainer Jane Cibelli.  He looks like a stand out on paper if he runs back to that last race.  Those trying to upend the favorite will look to Crockefeller, Jersey Storm Cat, Czech Master and Hollywood Left.

Race six is a claiming race for non-winners of two lifetime at a flat mile on the main track.  Malibu Spice is the 5-2 morning line favorite, but no guarantees for the five-year-old mare who just missed at this level by a neck last month.  Great Escape just ran a faster mile breaking her maiden than the favorite and is 5-1 on the morning line.  Classic Point is another long shot and will be making her third start off the layoff for trainer Allen Jerkens.  The daughter of Flatter drops in class by half her last claiming price and this may be her level as she broke her maiden for $16,000 in October at Belmont Park.  This race is a mess.

On the turf for race seven with top trainer Mike Maker sending out 5-2 Miss Tapit, who just broke her maiden for trainer Joseph Orseno.  Others playing the pick-6 will use The Marikutana, SS Pinafore and Patrice Merion, but don’t discount long shots Repossee and Sweet Irish Rose. 

Chee broke his maiden last month over the train for trainer Todd Pletcher and is the 5-2 morning line favorite for race eight.  The speed figure earned in this debut does not compare well to Moon Traveler, Big Screen, Street Thug and Bartolome.  Street Thug is an interesting layoff horse making his first start for Michelle Nevin, who took over the horses previously trained by Rick Dutrow.

Back on the turf for race nine, this time a starter handicap for four-year-olds and upward.  This race is begging to be won by a long shot.  The 12 runners in the field are between 7-2 and 20-1 on the morning line.  Good thing it’s a 10-cent minimum.

The finale is also on the turf, a maiden claiming race for three-year-olds going nine furlongs.  Ale will take the majority of the action dropping from $75,000 to $35,000 and putting the blinkers on.  The speed figure he earned in his last is tops in the field with only Rey Rocket and Saved the Best within six.  Success Rate was second, beaten a neck, at the level two starts back then did not run a step in the same race Ale came out of.  Not sure which horse shows up on Thursday, but may be backing at a square price.

Tough, tough sequence, but one that could pay out very well.  First post on Thursday at Gulfstream Park is 12:45 ET with the pick-6 scheduled to be off at 2:37.
