Pick 6 Preview: Santa Anita $62,270 Carryover - January 5, 2013
Pick-6 carryover on Saturday at the Great Race Place after long shots ruled the day on Friday. The sequence starts with race four, a maiden special weight on the turf, but we touched on that race and two others in the sequence as part of this week's Player's Edge so lets focus on the other three legs for today's blog.
Race six, a claiming race on the turf, features a full field of 12 going nine furlongs with Lamm the 5-2 morning line favorite. The seven-year-old gelding has finished in-the-money 14 times in his 21 starts on the turf, which includes eight-for-mine at Santa Anita. Of those eight; however, none gave been wins. Porfido is the choice dropping back into the claiming ranks. Over the past year, Porfido has run against straight claimers three times and has won them all. One of those wins was at nine furlongs over the Santa Anita turf course. Tab for the upset.
The eighth is another turf race, this time for allowance runners. Power Foot drops from the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby, but he drew poor in post 11. His two main rivals, Klisz and Vibrato Jazz, drew better in posts five and eight and must be used on the ticket. Klisz could be a single on a lot of tickets with Vibrato Jazz making his first start since early June. The race did come up with a lot of speed, which will help the chances of the late running Husband's Folly. Jockey Mike Smith lands on this runner after having previously having the mount on both Klisz and Vibrato Jazz.
The Sunday finale is a low-level claiming race for fillies and mares at six and one-half furlongs on the main track. Scary Ride is the morning line favorite but can't be trusted as a single. Friday's track profile aided off-the-pace runners so give preference to Pumpkin Pie, Somenchantd Evenin and Tiz a Daisy. Tough way to end the card.
First post on Saturday at Santa Anita is 3:30 with the pick-6 off at 5:03. Don't forget, race seven is the San Pasqual Stakes where Ultimate Eagle looks to be tough after the scratch of Hoorayforhollywood.
