Race Preview: Bing Crosby Stakes - Del Mar, July 28, 2013
Bing sang "Where the turf meets the surf" and on Sunday his track Del Mar honors him with the 68th running of the Grade 1 Bing Crosby stakes. The six furlong race drew a field of six led by morning line favorite Comma to the Top.
Comma to the Top is a terror in graded sprint races, especially at six furlongs. He has won five of nine at the distance including a pair of Grade 3 races. The son of Bwana Charlie exits a second place finish in the Grade 1 Triple Bend at Hollywood Park, but that was at seven furlongs. If that race had been six, Comma to the Top would have won.
Things won't be easy for the favorite on Sunday, but at least he has the track bias going for him. In sprints this meet, you don't want to be too far back and on the lead inside has been the best place to be. Coach Bob should put pressure on the favorite with Goldencents and Points Offthebench breathing down his next. On a fair surface, the race sets up well for Majestic City and Jimmy Creed.
Jimmy Creed is the preferred of the two, making his second start off nearly a four month layoff. He ran poor in the Triple Bend, but had an excuse, he lost a shoe. By Distorted Humor, Jimmy Creed has a win over the track and is a Grade 1 winner. Rafael Bejarano has the mount, looking to do one better than his second place finish aboard Paynter on Saturday. Rafael will have to time his ride his right if he wants to run down the favorite.
First post on Sunday at Del Mar is 5:05 pm ET with the Bing Crosby scheduled for 8:40.
