Race Preview: Carry Back Stakes - Calder Race Course, July 6, 2013
The first leg of the pick-5 at Calder on Saturday is the Grade 3 Carry Back stakes for three-year-olds. The six furlong sprint drew a field of seven led by morning line favorite R Free Roll, a filly taking on the boys.
This isn't the first time R Free Roll has tackled the males, in fact she is a perfect two-for-two against them in her career. She won an allowance race over the track last September and them destroyed them in the Unbridled Stakes last month. Off such a big effort, regression is possible and the rail draw offers her no breathers in a race that should unfold at a swift pace.
The favorite for the Unbridled was Sr. Quisqueyano, who merely ran around the track and finished fourth, beaten just under 10 lengths. He should be better fit second off the layoff, but may actually be a better horse around two turns.
The new shooter at Calder is the Steve Asmussen-trained Mico Margarita, who will be starting at his seventh different track in 10 career starts. His best races have been on the pace, but from post seven his jockey can stalk and pounce late.
The late threat in the Carry Back is City of Wisdom, the third place finisher in the Unbridled. City of Wisdom is the veteran of the group with 18 career starts. The problem is that he is only one-for-nine at Calder. R Free Roll jumped up with her best race last month, perhaps it's time for another to do the same.
Post time for the Carry Back is 3:32 pm ET and we already had a big scratch of Reneesgotzip out of the Princess Rooney, leaving Judy the Beauty as the heavy favorite.
