Big Bane Theory vs John Scot
The late pick-4 on Saturday at Santa Anita looks like a good one with three stake races and a maiden special weight with a full field of 12. We have already looked at two of the four in this week’s Player’s Edge so let’s break down the third stake race, the Crystal Water.
The Crystal Water is a nine furlong turf route for older horses that were bred in the Golden State of California. Only eight will line up, but contention runs deep.
Big Bane Theory and John Scot are dropping out of graded stake races and will be the two to concentrate on. Big Bane Theory showed good late kick in his first three starts, two wins, then was dull in the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby before running in the Sir Beaufort last out. Perhaps it was an instructed change of tactics, but the Artie Schiller colt found himself on the lead early then could not hold on late. A more patient ride will suit him just well.
John Scott has always been a favorite, but that does not always equate to victories. He has lost his last three starts, two of which being graded stakes, and now makes his turf debut. The good thing is John Scott is bred to handle the surface switch and all five of his lifetime wins have come on synthetic. Expect him to be close to the pace.
Swift Eagle and Circle the Moon are going to break from the gate free running with Huntsville and John Scott not far behind. In the third flight should be Stoney Fleece, Thirtyfirststreet with Big Bane Theory and Jules Journey trailing the field. July Journey gets no respect on the board, but he is a solid animal that has a devastating turn of foot; just watch his last race at Hollywood Park. Another run like that will put him back in the winner’s circle.
Post time for the Crystal Water on Saturday is 7:00 ET.
