Race Preview: Juvenile Showcase Day - Calder Race Course, August 24, 2013

August 24th, 2013

It's all about the two-year-olds on Saturday at Calder with ten races dedicated to the juveniles. The highlight of the day are the Affirmed and Susan's Girl Stakes.

The Susan's Girl is up first, race eight, and drew a field of seven. Scandalous Act is the 7-5 morning line favorite for the seven furlong race, but drew the rail and may be a bet against. The two fillies that look most dangerous are drawn directly to her outside in posts two and three. Boheme de Lavi ran a good race in her debut at Gulfstream Park, finishing second, then put it all together and broke her maiden by an authoritative four lengths earlier this month over the Calder track. Look for her late. Utootweet is drawn in post three and stretching out from five and one-half furlongs could put pressure on the favorite early. She is also entered in the Catcharisingstar, the five furlong turf sprint, so be sure to check out the scratches.

One race later is the Affirmed for the colts and geldings and all eyes will be on My Brown Eyed Guy, the 4-5 favorite that has won his last two starts and only was beat a nose in his debut. In the Dr. Fager Stakes last month he went head-to-head for the early lead then drew off to win by three and one-quarter lengths. He looks like the controlling speed and would be helped if his rivals D N A Approved and Best Plan Yet would go in the other races they are entered for on the day. My Brown Eyed Guy looks like a single in the late pick-4.

The other two races in the pick-4 are the Catcharisingstar and the Calder Dash, both at five furlongs on the turf. Secret Kitten, Utootweet, City in Sky and Solitary all deserve a look in the Catcharisingstar, which kicks off the pick-4. Tomei is a Wesley Ward long shot that may move up on the turf. Elusive Cowgirl is the only entrant with a win over the grass after winning a maiden claimer at Ellis Park.

The Calder Dash may be the best betting race on the card. A full field of 12 entered the five furlong race and the morning line favorite, Macho Trini, drew poor in post 12. Many of the horses don't have the breeding that scream turf, but some of them could move up on the surface switch. Breitling Flyer and Union Cash are two that may like the grass as would Vinny's Wildcat and the 20-1 morning line Bon Accord. Truth it, this looks like a race that has "all" written all over it.

First post at Calder on Saturday is 12:50 pm ET with the late pick-4 going to post at 4:00.
