Race Preview: San Juan Capistrano - Santa Anita, April 21, 2013
Sunday is closing day at Santa Anita and that means the running of the traditional closing day feature, the Grade 2 San Juan Capistrano Handicap. This years race drew a field of seven and contention runs deep.
Sky Kingdom is the morning line favorite off his win in the Grade 3 Tokyo City, but that was in the dirt and this will be his first start over the turf. Of course out of a Kingmambo mare, Sky Kingdom could actually move up over the grass. The four-year-old colt looks like controlling speed of the marathon race and could run the field off their feet.
Looking to upset the favorite are a host of contenders. Interaction has been overrated in his last several starts and needs to rebound off the dull effort in the San Luis Rey. All Squared Away was second in the San Luis Rey while Fire With Fire was third. Oilisblackgold was second to Sky Kingdom in the Tokyo City, but is winless in four starts over the turf.
That leaves Lime Rickey and Smart Ellis. Lime Rickey can run all day long and has been first, second or third in 23 of his 38 career starts. Smart Ellis comes off a good win in an allowance race and picks up Garrett Gomez in the irons. This may be the best use of the "all" button.
First post at the Great Race Place on Sunday is 3:30 ET with the San Juan Cap off at 6:35. Don't forget mandatory payouts in all the big multi-race exotics.
