Race Preview: Scioto Downs Columbus Survival Series 2nd Leg Thursday June 20, 2013

June 19th, 2013

Races 10 and 12 are the two Survival Series races tonight. The final will be held on June 29th.

Race 10's probable favorite is Mike's Hope in the 5 post after making the most of outside positions. It's hard to dismiss that 17 1/2 length win in 1:51.3 two races back. None of the rest of this group has shown anything like that in any of their recent races.

If he falters, makes a misstep or misses a cue, expect Family Spirit N to try to steal the thunder and the win. Gladiare Grande and CDS Report could close on the leaders in the stretch, but will they have enough left to catch them is the question. I don't expect this race to be decided early.

There are too many closers here and the favorite only won by a head last time out, albeit from a difficult post. I'm not sure this is the sure thing that it appears to be at first glance and will be hedging my bets, over and under, in exotics.

Race 12 is another story. Dolly's Rembrandt is at 8-5 in the morning line with good reason. He hasn't lost in 5 races and has won them all decisively with good times and class ratings for each of the last 3 races. I have no reason to think that he'll forget how to win today.

As for who will be trying to foil him, I hate to leave out Ramember, even though his post position is a tough one. Le-Sirenuse could be there, if he can leave early enough and find racing room. I'm also looking at A Bay Bay to put in a run with his usual late closing style. Will he be close enough for it to count though?

Danger Sign N may manage to get in there for part of the exotics, or even win, if he runs the same way from the 9 post as he did from inside posts. He has the speed and some class, so keep an eye on the odds on him.

Look for a skirmish for early position in this race as there is a lot of early speed here. If the early speed horses burn each other out, which often happens, who's to say that a closer like A Bay Bay or Blue Collar Raider won't steal the prize out from under the low-priced favorites.

Good racing luck and safe trips to the drivers and horses on tonight's card. We'll see the finalists on June 29th.
