Race Preview: Selene Stakes - Woodbine, May 19, 2013
The late pick 4 at Woodbine goes to post at 3:55 ET and the second leg of the sequence is the Grade 3 Selene Stakes for three-year-old fillies. With the scratch of Takeyourbreathaway the field is now down to eight with Spring Venture the one to beat.
Spring Venture comes off a disappointing eighth place finish in the Grade 1 Ashland, a race won by Emollient, who came back to disappoint in the Black-Eyed Susan on Friday. The daughter of Spring At Last loves synthetic surfaces and is one-for-one over the main track at Woodbine. She won the Grade 3 Mazarine last year by an easy length and a half.
Spring Venture is not the morning line favorite, that honor goes to Nipissing, who also ran in the Ashland, finishing sixth, five lengths in front of Spring Venture. Nipissing won all four starts as a juvenile and is now making her second start of a five month layoff. She could encounter some trouble from her rail draw like Orb did in the Preakness and her jockey must find a way out at some point.
The long shots, if you can call 3-1 a long shots, are led by Overheard. The Macho Uno filly broke her maiden over the track in November and comes off a solid second place finish in the Grade 3 Appalachian over the Keeneland turf. Her five furlong drill on May 12 looks like the perfect tightener for this race.
Leigh Court and Thats Our Princess will be out there winging on the front end and will try to steal it. Leigh Court just won an allowance race while Thats Our Princess just broke her maiden. Coffee Clique is an interesting runner at 8-1 luring the services of top jock Luis Contreras. Coffee Clique broke the maiden in her debut over the Woodbine track in December.
Will the class fillies win or will a new filly rise to the occasion? Find out at 4:25 ET.
