Race Preview: Super Derby - Louisiana Downs, Sep 7, 2013

September 7th, 2013

The feature race on Saturday at Louisiana Downs is the Grade 2 Super Derby for three-year-old colts and geldings. The nine furlong race drew a field of seven led by morning line favorite Departing.

Departing is even money on the line and is likely to go off shorter than that. The War Front gelding has won five of his seven career races including win in the Grade 2 West Virginia Derby and Grade 3 Illinois Derby. He is the class of the field and can adapt to any pace scenario, which may be a slow one.

The Wayne Catalano-trained colt has won two of four races in his career and will be making his two-turn debut.

The Super Derby is the third leg of the 50-cent pick-5, which starts with the Temperance Hill and includes the Unbridled Stakes. Bravo Habibi, Joe Hollywood, Gantry and Louisiana Glory are the ones to beat in the Temperance Hill while Major Marvel, String King and Global Power look to battle it out on the lawn in the Unbridled.

First post at Louisiana Downs on Saturday is 1:00 pm ET with the Super Derby scheduled for 6:15. Race nine, start of the pick-5, is off one hour prior at 5:12.
