Race Preview The Meadows: Meadow Bright PA Sire Stakes Division 1 Race 9 - Friday August 16, 2013
There are two divisions of the Meadow Bright PA Sire Stakes Trot for 3 Year Old Fillies on tonight's program, race 9 and 10. In Race 9, there are three fillies who raced against each other in the Hambletonian Oaks. One of them, 1-Classic Martine, was second to Bee A Magician, the winner. Any filly that can manage that is definitely worth a lot of consideration.
Although she's number 1 for wagering purposes, Classic Martine is in the 6 post, not a bad post for a trotter with the pressure of a stakes race bearing down on her. Also on the upside, she has Tim Tetrick in the bike, no stranger to stakes races. Add trainer Chris Oakes to the plus side too, with a 35% win percentage for trots. It's hard not to like this one.
Chris Oakes's other entry, Frau Blucher, number 2 for wagering but in the 7 post, broke stride in the Oaks, perhaps because of the 26.4 first quarter or perhaps because she needed a race after a month off. She's a filly that usually does well coming off a layoff, so maybe she just didn't like The Meadowlands. She does like The Meadows, judging by the fact that she's had 4 wins out of 4 races here. She likes an off track too, with 2 out of 3 wins for that, so keep an eye on the sky. Ron Pierce has the call for the first time with this filly, who is back on Lasix for this race.
2-Ruffleshaveridges, starting from the 1 post, a Tom Ridge filly, will have her work cut out for her from that position in a trot. Dan Rawlings will most likely try to get her to leave early to get into striking distance for a hard close, which she's good at. Her times aren't up to most of the rest of the entries, but she's done well at this track, posting 5 wins out of 12 races here.
A newcomer to The Meadows and also with a new driver, Brett Miller, is 3-Miss Panther, who will start from the 4 post. Sired by Classic Photo, this filly did well at Harrah's with George Napolitano and posted some impressive speed ratings there. Whether she'll take to The Meadows is the question. The morning line odds maker has her at 4-1 for a reason, but I'm not sure what that reason is.
4-Mistery Woman, who will start from the 3 post, broke stride in the Hambletonian Oaks but won an elimination over Classic Martine before that. She's posted good times and speed ratings throughout her 3 year old campaign and has been in the money in several stakes races this year. She's also 1 for 1 for wins at The Meadows. David Miller has driven her in the money over 75% of the time and has a 30% win average with her trainer, Jonas Czernyson. If she stays flat, count her in for purse money.
5-Shouda Cuda Wuda, starting from the 4 post, an SJ's Caviar filly, has hit the exacta in 6 out of 9 races this year, the first year that she's raced. She's moving way up in class and is also dealing with faster speed ratings than she's used to. She'll have to exceed anything she's done so far, if she wants a piece of this one.
6-Drink The Wine, starting from the 5 post, has Nifty Norman for a trainer, and he's at 23% wins for trots. This filly, out of Andover Hall and damsire Yankee Glide, seems to be struggling this year, after an impressive 2 year old season with 4 out of 10 wins then. Like the 5, she'll have to do better than her best so far to contend with the other fillies. She's had 1 win out of 2 races at The Meadows.
It wouldn't be a stakes race at The Meadows without a Dave Palone-Ron Burke entry and the 7-Tonato of Love, is just that. First time driving her for Palone and Burke acquired her from Ray Schnittker in mid July, so he may be still finding her strengths and weaknesses. She's had 3 races at The Meadows with no purse money, but she definitely has the best driver and trainer The Meadows can offer, this time, so that could change.
Expect this race to be fast and furious with every driver doing his best to place his filly where she needs to be to get the winning trip. Safe trips to all the drivers and horses and don't forget to watch and wager on Bet America.
