Race Preview: Turf Maiden Special Weight - Gulfstream Park, February 23, 2013

February 23rd, 2013

One of the best betting races on the Saturday card at Gulfstream Park is the last race, a full field of three-year-old maiden special weight runners going one mile on the turf. Of the 12 runners in the field, only two are greater than 12-1 on the morning line.

Forever Thing is the lukewarm morning line favorite at 7-2. The Tapit colt was a $1-million purchase as a yearling and is making his debut. Nothing on the pedigree screams debut winner, but obviously must be respected for the trainer/jockey combination of John Velazquez and Todd Pletcher.

Market Outlook is the other first-time-starter worth a look from the Chad Brown barn. Brown wins at less than 10% with his debut runners so Market Outlook may be one to watch next time.

Those with experience with a shot are Sevenoaks, Harrythenavigator, Surfspun, Summer Shiner, Force Multiplier, Bad Hombre and Tiz Now My Choice. Sevenoaks deserves a long look for trainer Bill Mott. The Mizzen Mast colt was bet in his debut and split the field. He now stretches out and gets on the turf. Mott shines with this move.

Tough way to end all the multi-race exotics, but it could be a very lucrative one.

Post time for the 12th race is 6:05 ET.
