Race Preview: Turf Sprint and Humana Distaff - Churchill Downs, May 4, 2013
The first two races of the all-stakes pick-6 on Saturday at Churchill Downs is the Grade 3 Turf Sprint and Grade 1 Humana Distaff. Lets take a look at some of the contenders.
Up first is the Turf Sprint where Havelock, Regally Ready, Ghost is Clear, Chamberlain Bridge and Icon Ike are going to take most of the wagering action. Icon Ike has been working very well in the mornings, but there are some concerns.
Icon Ike, like most of the favorites are closers, and that might not play well over the rain-soaked turf course. Also this race is five furlongs and he may be best at five and one-half.
The upsetter in the field is Southern Dude who looks like lone speed in the field and could get a great trip from the rail.
The Humana Distaff is up next, with fillies and mares sprinting seven furlongs. Jamaican Smoke looks like the speed from the rail and should get a nice lead over Aubby K and Burban. The pace should not be fast but if it is, Rumor and Same Cross will be along in time.
Rumor is a Grade 3 winner, but can throw in a clunker at times while Same Cross is making her graded stakes debut. Byrama is another late closing sprinter and is making her dirt debut.
Post time for the Turf Sprint is 1:19 ET with the Humana off at 2:08.
