Race Preview: Winning Colors Stakes - Churchill Downs, May 27, 2013

May 27th, 2013

The feature race on Memorial Day at Churchill Downs is the 10th running of the Grade 3 Winning Colors, a six furlong sprint for fillies and mares. This years race drew a field of seven, led by morning line favorite Judy the Beauty.

Judy the Beauty is making her ninth career start on Monday and in her previous eight starts she had yet to finish worse than second. The daughter of Ghostzapper got a good tightener at Keeneland last month and is a deserving favorite. The one possible knock on the filly is that she has yet to win over a dirt surface. That may be splitting hairs because she was second in a pair of Grade 1's and a Grade 2 including a nose defeat to Emma's Encore in the Grade 1 Prioress last summer at Saratoga.

The best chances to upset the favorite should come from Beat the Blues, Blueeyesintherein and Burban. The killer B's!

Beat the Blues is probably the least likely of the three, but she gets back to her favorite track and finished a good second in the race last year. She does have a bit of hang in her and may just want to run with the pack, but is a must use in any trifecta or superfecta play.

Blueeyesintherein also loves Churchill with two wins in three starts. She was two-for-two as a juvenile then came back this year with a win at Oaklawn before finishing fifth in the Grade 3 Eight Belles. She may be the pace of the race.

Burban ran arguably the best race of her career, finishing second in the Grade 1 Humana Distaff on Derby weekend. Burban has three wins and two seconds in five starts at Churchill and should get a nice trip from the outside draw.

If Judy the Beauty shows up with her A game then the others are running for second. Even if the favorite wins, there could be some good prices underneath.

The Memorial Day card is already underway, post time for the Winning Colors is 5:30 ET.
