Aged pacers highlight Tuesday cards at Rosecroft
While certainly few would compare the quality of the overnight horses that compete on the Tuesday cards at Rosecroft Raceway each week to the stellar aged pacers that contest the lucrative, prestigious George Morton Levy Memorial Series for five weekends at Yonkers Raceway each spring, the local stalwart group offers a good blend of quality and durability.
In the opening race on the final Tuesday card in March, Madegs Lil Fortune (Frank Milby) ended a modest skid and her local bridesmaid status when she led throughout as the 6-5 favorite to capture a non-winners of $6000 last five conditioned event for pacing fillies and mares in 1:54.1. A 10-year-old Cams Fortune mare trained by Ken Schlotzhauer, Madges Lil Fortune notched her first win in four tries at the current meet after being second in each of her three previous outings. She now owns 40 wins from 233 lifetime tries.
One race later on the card, Main A Dieu Too (Roger Plante, Jr.) benefited from smart handling and a pocket trip to capture a non-winners of $4000 last five class for older pacing males in 1:53.1. Owned and trained by Gary Ewing of Ge's Romanero fame, Main A Dieu Too gained command at the outset, yielded to favored Movie Sequel before the half, sat a pocket trip from there and overhauled the leader in the lane for his second win in nine starts this season. He now sports a 28-27-15 slate from 159 career outings.
Several races later on the card, RC's Super Toy (Corey Braden) displayed plenty of early speed and some youthful vigor late to capture a non-winners of $2500 last five conditioned event in 1:54.3. A 10-year-old Powerful Toy gelding owned, bred and trained by William "Rusty" Cox, RC's Super Toy notched his second win in 11 starts on the year and now owns a 13-13-28 slate and career earnings of over $95,000 from 185 lifetime outings.
Then arguably the best performance of the night was delivered by Little Miss Woohoo (Milby) in a non-winners of $4000 last five class for pacing fillies and mares. A six-year-old daughter of Cam's Rocket trained by Clyde Oglesby for the Denmar Stable, Little Miss Woohoo tucked fourth eaely, brushed to command before the half in 55.2, opened a clear lead down the backside by three-quarters in 1:23.2 then drew off to a nine-length score in 1:53. It was her second win in nine starts this year and her 13th victory in 94 career tries and established a new lifetime mark in the process.
Then one race later in the $9000 Open 2 for older pacers, Hot Art (Milby) stamped himself as an early favorite for a horse of the meet title - one each gets selected by Rosecroft track management and the Mid-Atlantic Chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association - when he benefited from a pocket trip and then outkicked Hi Sir (Russell Foster) in the lane for a neck score in 1:51.1. Owned and trained by John Baxter, Hot Art has won twice in three starts at the meet and boasts the season's best clocking and he ended the five-race win streak of Hi Sir, who attempted to prevail in his usual, grinding first over fashion.
One race later on the card, Caviart Tyler (Jonathan Roberts) regained his winning ways when he led throughout to capture a non-winners of $4000 last five class in 1:53.2 as the 4-5 favorite. An eight-year-old Dragon Again gelding trained by William "Bib" Roberts of Yankee Co-Ed and Trapeze fame, Caviart Tyler notched his first win in four starts on the season and now owns a 34-21-20 slate from 175 lifetime outings for owner Thomas Cooke of Nuclear Breeze fame.
Then several races later on the card, Manhattan Rusty N (Plante) rallied from last early to capture a non-winners of $6000 last five conditioned event for older pacers in 1:52.4. A nine-year-old Artsplace gelding owned and trained by Ewing, Manhattan Rusty N got into the live outer flow nearing the half and rallied three-wide through the lane to outlast 60-1 outsider Lone Raider by a head. It was the second win in nine starts this year for Manhattan Rusty N, who now boasts seasonal earnings of nearly $8500 after failing to earn a dime in five tries at Dover Downs before returning to Rosecroft for the spring meet.
Of course, this Saturday evening will mark the third round of preliminaries for the George Morton Levy Memorial Series at Yonkers. For the second straight week the race was split into four divisions, with Beach Memories, Polak A and PH Supercam - last year's Levy final hero - each boasting two wins through the first two legs. Beach Memories, however, will seek his third Levy leg tally for a new barn after changing hands from trainer Ron Burke to Scott DiDomenico before Tuesday's draw.
