Zayat Stables' homebred American Pharoah outdueled Firing Line and fellow Bob Baffert trainee Dortmund to capture Saturday’s 141st running of the Kentucky Derby under a picture perfect day at Churchill Downs.

A record crowd of 170,513 came out to watch last year’s juvenile champion sail home, fighting to the wire to complete 1 1/4 miles over the fast main track in 2:03.

The win gave jockey Victor Espinoza his third win in the Run for the Roses, and his second straight after taking the 2014 edition with California Chrome.

Now 6-5-0-0 in his career, American Pharoah earned his fifth consecutive win. He was the 5-2 favorite and paid $7.80 for the victory.
