American Pharoah Haskell Anticipation Unrivaled in Sport

My biggest question ahead of American Pharoah’s Triple Crown try (besides, “Can he do it?”) was “What happens when it happens?”

One thing that I didn’t think would happen is that he would race again, and as I type this we are nine hours away from me being proved blissfully and wonderfully wrong.

From conception to starting gate, horse racing is a game of anticipation, and even when you 90.9% know what to expect (the percentage chance American Pharoah has of winning the Haskell Stakes if his 1-to-10 odds represent “fair” value), there is still a nervous energy that surrounds a horse race.

Even when you know what to expect, you don’t know what to expect. Will American Pharoah win by the length of the stretch? Will he have to battle for the win at any point during the race? Will some other three-year-old run the race of his life to be mentioned in the same breath as Onion? Will American Pharoah be done with his gallop out before someone asks his connections which race is next?

We’ll know most of those answers later today, and they will surely yield more questions. The great thing is that we have a Triple Crown winner in training to answer them.
