Amis Gizmo crushes foes in Prince of Wales

Rating less than two lengths off a contested pace of :22.79 and :46.48 involving All On Red and Narrow Escape, Amis Gizmo took off after that pair approaching the three-quarter mark and quickly built up an insurmountable lead. Under Luis Contreras, Amis Gizmo cruised home by 5 1/2 lengths, completing 1 3/16 miles over a fast track in 1:56.76.
"Early in the race, I had the opportunity to sit behind horses. My horse was so nice and relaxed," Contreras said. "At the turn, I opened up a little to start to run and I had so much horse. I was handy the whole way. I was looking back to see where everybody was and they were a long way back. He finished very strong."
Owned by Ivan Dalos and trained by Josie Carroll, Amis Gizmo paid $4.70 as the 13-10 favorite.
Leavem in Malibu, who trailed the field of eight Canadian-bred three-year-olds through the first half, rallied to finish second, 3 3/4 lengths ahead of Niigon's Edge. Queen's Plate winner Sir Dudley Digges never factored, finishing sixth.
"I had a good trip. I dropped in on the first turn and saved ground and was right behind the winner on the backside, but I was kind of empty by the second turn. He didn't take me anywhere today," said Julien Leparoux, the rider of Sir Dudley Digges.
Undefeated from four starts at two, all of them stakes, Amis Gizmo finished fifth in his three-year-old bow in the C$100,000 Wando, his only start against open company to date. He rebounded to take the Plate Trial at Woodbine, but was caught by Sir Dudley Digges in the Plate itself, losing by a half-length.
"Today there was more speed....If we had the same fractions in the Queen's Plate, I think it would have been completely different. I'm happy with the way he ran last time, but I'm happier today," Contreras said.
Sired by Giant Gizmo, Amis Gizmo was reared by the Victory Gallop mare Galloping Ami. He was bred in Ontario by Tall Oaks Farm.
