Arlington Park Track Update for May 18

May 18th, 2021

The Arlington racing meet is three weeks in, which is enough time to start picking out some trends. Some of the people to watch have been familiar from previous years, though others may not be as familiar unless you follow the circuit closely.

Jockeys

Jockey Jareth Loveberry, last year's leading rider, has picked back up where he left off. He has eight victories so far (8-for-33, 24%), three clear of Chris Emigh, Constantino Roman, and Jose Lopez. Like last year, Loveberry is riding first call for perennial leading trainer Larry Rivelli.

Note that Jose Lopez's five wins have come from just 20 starts, a 25% win rate. Two of those victories have been for trainer Chris Block, who he has been riding successfully with for several years. Two others have been for Christopher Davis, with whom he won a pair late in the Hawthorne meet as well. Lopez also has eight more money finishes, good for a 65% in-the-money rate.

Another rider to watch is E.T. Baird. He has only taken three calls so far this meet, but was an exciting surprise to see back in the jockey colony. He has always been an excellent gate jockey; the rides he has given so far show he still has that touch with frontrunners.

Trainers

The top spot in the trainer standings at Arlington so far is no surprise; Larry Rivelli has won eight times already (8-for-21, 38%). That does make him a clear leader in number of starters as well. Trainer Brittany Vanden Berg is second in wins; her four winners come from just seven starts (57%).

If you're looking for big prices, trainer Fernando Bahena has sent home several already. Bahena has three wins from eight starts so far this Arlington meet (38%), and they've all been prices. Irish Lighted Road was 7.6-1, Huey Attack was 17.1-1, and his most recent winner, Hero Alexandra, was a whopping 36.9-1.in a field of just eight.
