Australia Racing Preview for 2/6/2014
by Grant Davies
Racing this Friday night as usual is at Moonee Valley, and we think we have found some good value on the card to ensure that you have a little spending money for tomorrow at Caulfield where there is an absolute bonanza of graded stakes racing including the final hit out for the Fillies and Colts aiming to win this year’s Sportingbet Blue Diamond Stakes.
MOONEE VALLEY – AUS A
RACE 3 - BLACKWOODS HANDICAP 2040m $35000 (AUS)
FIRST BLOOM is weighted to just win this race. Her win at this track last time (always love a horse who has won here) was great and she is in just over the limit weight. There has also been winners come out of the start she won here previously and they were nowhere near her that day. I would prefer it if STREETS IN SEATTLE was carrying less weight but the class here is not that grand so she definitely should figure. JELLY BABY certainly did finish a long way behind FIRST BLOOM last start but she was 1st up after a fairly lengthy spell and she has plenty of improvement in her; that said her record here is not great? XAAR BEST will appreciate the rise to the 2040m and may be at good value odds here.
SELECTIONS - 2 First Bloom / 1 Streets of Seattle / 3 Xaar Best
RACE 5 - ESSENDON MAZDA 55 SECOND CHALLENGE HEAT 12 955m $55000 (AUS)
Really love this series as it always provides thrilling viewing, and tonight is no exception. Speed will be strong as usual, is there any other way? Like the way MAGNUS REIGN is set to settle down in this race. He has a very good record in these 955m races and will again be the test I think. I cannot fault KAISER SUN's form but this is not the Flemington straight (far from it) and I think that it will be a little chaotic for him, especially first time at the track. SCHUMACHER can definitely be a player from a strong midfield position and the return to this track only benefits him. PAARATTE PAT and IMPULSE BUY would be my two outside selections for the multiples but you can definitely make cases for others.
SELECTIONS – 4 Magnus Reign / 6 Schumacher / 1 Kaiser Sun
RACE 8 - SPORTINGBET HANDICAP 1000m $35000 (AUS)
Definitely a deep race when you take a look at the form on offer and horses involved. To start off you cannot really ignore HOTEL SIERRA. She has been in tip top form and will get a nice weight to carry after her claim. ROYAL SCANDAL is suited back to this grade and comes into it with freshness on her side, which should benefit her. AZZCOOL has a nice inside draw (handy) and the stable is always here for a reason, so it pays to respect them. NELLA FANTASIA was impressive last start and I can concede I am not a fan of drop backs in distance, but she has form around it and the trainer is a smart man. The two top weights, NAVORINA and RUBYONE are definitely a chance, but 60kg is a big impost for them here. The unknown has to be KINKY SHOT…7yr old mare with five starts (3 wins) resuming after nearly two years off????? Anyone’s guess!!
SELECTIONS - 9 Hotel Sierra / 6 Nella Fantasia / 11 Azzcool
