Australia Racing Preview for 3/28/2014
by Grant Davies
What a fantastic day of racing we have ahead of us at Rosehill Gardens. Along with a bunch of graded race s we have a triple grade 1 treat with the Galaxy, George Ryder and Rosehill Guineas all up for grabs. Things won’t be easy, they never are on the big days, but we are sure we’ve got a pretty good look at the winners here, so let’s go and make some money!
ROSEHILL GARDENS – AUS A
RACE 2 – GRADE 2 BOWERMANS OFFICE FURNITURE PAGO PAGO STAKES 1200m of $175000 (AUS)
SIDESTEP won this last year 7 days before his 2nd in the Golden Slipper. The Black Opal form looks an awful lot better now that Ghibellines came out and won the Todman last week. I would've liked MR CHA CHA a bit in this race even without that form turnaround to frank his Canberra effort. He can work over on-speed here. Happy to be on but there are several looming dangerously - KLAMMER (from same race), KUMAON, MR BOGART, KHRYSLER (Rodd on)
SELECTIONS – MR CHA CHA / KLAMMER / MR BOGART
RACE 3 – GRADE 3 HYLAND RACE COLOURS BIRTHDAY CARD STAKES 1200m of $150000 (AUS)
Tough race and not easy at all to rule runners out straight away. LILLIBURLERO comes up with the inside gate again but they may pan out better here than her last race at Randwick. She beat home six of today's rivals in that event. Two runs on Slow just OK/possibly inconclusive. AVOID LIGHTNING only gets 1 kilo on LILLIBURLERO from last start but she really should have gone much closer than a 1.3L margin. RECOINAGE was in between them and she gets the better of these weights but will she offer the same here as what she has recently at Randwick. SINGLE STYLE also worth some consideration given that she comes from the same event. Watch for SHAHAD.
SELECTIONS – LILLIBURLERO / RECOINAGE / SHAHAD
RACE 4 – GRADE 2 IRT MAGIC NIGHT STAKES 1200mOf $175000 (AUS)
9 maidens in the 16 acceptors and only four metro winners in the race. Fancy a couple of the main chances might settle off and haven't seen wet as yet. CLIFTON RED puts on winkers on a 7 day back-up. Ran just .04 seconds slower than Earthquake for the final 200m last week, that’s worth something. PRESS REPORT looking for a breakthrough. Might try to be poised in front half? WEDDING does shape up as some sort of wildcard but she draws no better than she did on debut. This is a little bit of a lottery to be honest and Grade 2 status….well.
SELECTIONS – CLIFTOON RED / PRESS REPORT / WEDDING
RACE 5 – LISTED RANDWICK EQUINE CENTRE DARBY MUNRO STAKES 1200m of $125000 (AUS)
Excellent race this edition. It's all made more interesting with the recent trial form of NORTHERN GLORY. She's been asked to extend in two recent hit outs and has scored by big margins over handy types (including BOSS LANE, Weary, Villa Verde…who are all good horses). She's blinkers off here I think for the first time. Bit hard to tell off the vision (definitely had them on in the first trial and at Gold Coast). She could be perfectly poised in this run. FLIGHT ACADEMY ready to win though and could be an all-round 'safer play'. Others to watch would be COSMIC ENDEAVOUR and CALMING INFLUENCE.
SELECTIONS – FLIGHT ACADEMY / CALMING INFLUENCE / SIDESTEP
RACE 6 – GRADE 1 BLOODSTOCK.COM.AU GALAXY 1100m of $400000 (AUS)
In this race last year BEL SPRINTER was awesome, beating SNITZERLAND 3.3L, both carrying 53.5kg. He meets her worse off despite not winning since and she has scored a G1 recently. RAIN AFFAIR and KENCELLA know only one way. Conditions crucial. Trainer Ryan might even scratch SNITZERLAND if we end up on Heavy while RAIN AFFAIR has plenty of convictions on dry but has never ever run poorly on wet. FAMOUS SEAMUS drawing the inside gate is not a bonus but the return was terrific and if he can build on that is hard to beat. KENCELLA strikes while iron is hot but a speed duel wouldn't help his chances at all.
SELECTIONS – FAMOUS SEAMUS / SNITZERLAND / RAIN AFFAIR
RACE 7 – GRADE 1 GEORGE RYDER STAKES 1500m of $1000000 (AUS)
Last eight winners of this race have either been 3YO or 6YO, four each. Latest three winners have come through the Canterbury Stakes which gives us RED TRACER but then we have to consider the last female winner was in 1986…..1986! And the Wednesday word from Waller was that she would only run here if track was worst side of Slow. So to simplify it, if she's running I'll tip her. If we end up on Dead then I might just take a little chance on GORDON LORD BYRON. First-up 1500m is always a challenge but his record is pretty solid and he may just be capable. BOBAN won’t give in quietly so be aware, he really has been a revelation the last 12 months, and we have to respect EL ROCA. SACRED FALLS can win.
SELECTIONS – RED TRACER / GORDON LORD BYRON / SACRED FALLS
RACE 8 – GRADE 1 TAB.COM.AU ROSEHILL GUINEAS 2000m of $500000 (AUS)
Very keen to see PUCCINI come across from NZ. His Derby win was awesome and we have in recent years seen the likes of Jimmy Choux and Silent Achiever come from that race into this and do very well. He showed versatility last start after ending up getting pushed way back in the field; he made a midrace move and just kept on running. He's a smart animal no doubt but here he is 4 weeks between runs and those latest victories have been fortnight/fortnight/fortnight. Also a little dubious if track were to be very wet - he simply hasn't seen it. DISSIDENT has, and gone well. LATE CHARGE and TERANADO are my wet track roughies.
SELECTIONS – PUCCINI / TERANADO / DISSIDENT
RACE 9 – GRADE 3 PERCY SYKES TRIBUTE STAKES 1900m of $150000 (AUS)
PORCELLANUS to lead. SCORPIO QUEEN is on a one week turnaround out of the Coolmore and her run there was plenty good enough to get the top nod here. Twice a winner on Heavy so if those conditions are in effect then no worries. EPINGLE went very close to winning this race last year and she only has 1.5 kilos more this time around despite winning two Tassie Cups recently. Happy on soft and Williams stays on. MAHARA the lightest raced mare and extra distance shouldn't faze too much. If the track is very wet then promote KNEAD THE DOUGH.
SELECTIONS – SCORPIO QUEEN / EPINGLE / MAHARA
