Australia Racing Preview for 4/11/2014
by Grant Davies
Huge day at Randwick coming up and it’s going to be a great day to be looking for winners. No less than 4 Grade 1’s will be decided, including the classic and prestigious THE STAR DONCASTER MILE and the DARLEY TJ SMITH. So let’s waste no time and get down to reviewing one of the best days Australian racing has to offer.
RACE 3 – GRADE 3 THE OTHER WOMAN P J BELL STAKES 1200m of $200000 (AUS)
Fillies, fillies, fillies. 22 of them in fact. Speed ensured from 5,6,11 and 18 while two more of Gai's – NORTHERN GLORY and SHAHAD - have decisions to make about whether they want to get involved from very deep draws. This could be a very informative race because I feel that two that might like a damp track best are draw inside (CALMING INFLUENCE) and outside (NORTHERN). Lean to the latter as she has a wet track run under the belt. Note that EVERAGE has beaten TWILIGHT ROYALE and run 2nd to NORTHERN GLORY on Heavy tracks. May not be the worst pending conditions.
SELECTIONS – NORTHERN GLORY / BOUND FOR EARTH / EVERAGE
RACE 4 – GRADE 2 SCHWEPPES CHAIRMAN'S HANDICAP 2600m of $300000 (AUS)
7 and 10 3,5,6. There looks to be three chances here for mine. SERTORIUS backs up from what looked a taxing run last weekend. He was asked to do a bit in the BMW and ended up a fair old sitting shot. In the end three ran past him – Silent Achiever, It's A Dundeel and Fiorente. Keep in mind he was a way off Carlton House in the Ranvet prior and OPINION has beaten Carlton House and THE OFFER has beaten OPINION. Fancy the latter may take a trail today and may be able to finish with more gusto. A 4 kilo swing on THE OFFER won't hurt either. Conditions will suit all three.
SELECTIONS – SERTORIUS / EPINGLE / OPINION
RACE 5 – GRADE 1 INGLIS SIRES' 1400m of $1000000 (AUS)
Fillies were first seven home in the Slipper and our two faves here are girls as well. TIME FOR WAR the likely leader but he is up against three (for mine) better credentialed female stable mates. PEGGY JEAN and BELIEVE YOURSELF have run well in the likely conditions and via Bring Me The Maid can be lined up roughly. PEGGY JEAN's only win was in a restricted Inglis race but after Mossfun's Slipper win it is harder to knock the quality of those Inglis races. Rawiller can suit. As for UNENCUMBERED and CORNROW, I have their Slipper runs down as forgivable but they may see similar conditions here.
SELECTIONS – TIME FOR WAR / PEGGY JEAN / KUMAON
RACE 6 – GRADE 1 BMW AUSTRALIAN DERBY 2400m of $2000000 (AUS)
PUCCINI could lead again and get a totally different sort of time out front. Apparently the saddle shifted at Rosehill and therefore we could see him lob along much more happily today. Maybe. Keep in mind he is back to being 2 weeks b/t runs. CRITERION was dominant in the obvious lead-up and now is a clear favourite. Hard to see anything turning the tables on him I suppose but with pace on and him cutting the corner he did get a few things going all his way. SINGING FLAME comes from a lesser race it seems but he was so game last week I'll have to be with him on both totes.
SELECTIONS – SINGING FLAME / PUCCINI / CRITERION
RACE 7 – GRADE 1 DARLEY T J SMITH STAKES 1200m of $2500000 (AUS)
It's a fantastic field assembled - $2.5M on offer over 1200m and a field of 20. Speed expected then and we get it from 1,14,15,17. Of course you could argue that last year's version was better, but only because Black Caviar won it. If you're keen to go searching GORDON LORD BYRON has some Black Caviar form references via Moonlight Cloud and given the way he lifted himself off the canvas to win the Ryder whose to say he can't come back in trip and go back-to-back. I admit he is easier to find given the fact I found him a fortnight ago. We'd probably have to get to Slow to really like him.
SELECTIONS – LANKAN RUPEE / REBEL DANE / GORDON LORD BYRON
RACE 8 – GRADE 1 THE STAR DONCASTER MILE 1600m of $3000000 (AUS)
Not convinced they're going to go along too quick here. Reckon 17 and 18 can get up and over. 8 and 10 trail handy from draws nearer the fence. EL ROCA fought on impressively in the Ryder. That was his first go on officially slow going and if he doesn't see any worse here then I'm happy to be in his corner. MESSENE yet to see anything worse than Dead so obviously that's a query. SACRED FALLS, ROYAL DESCENT, WEARY and HAWKSPUR (all Waller) all likely to be closing strongly late and could forgive DISSIDENT his Guineas run to a degree. Top weight BOBAN has to get a mile back and will face a task.
SELECTIONS – EL ROCA / ROYAL DESCENT / HAWKSPUR
