Australia Racing Preview for 4/24/2014
by Grant Davies
Friday brings us ANZAC day racing from Flemington before another big weekend of racing up at Randwick with the two Grade 1’s, the CHAMPAGNE STAKES and the ALL AGED STAKES! Let’s get the ball rolling here at Flemington first though and get a nice little bankroll for Saturday!
FLEMINGTON – AUS A
RACE 3 - AUCKLAND RACING CLUB HANDICAP 1000m Of $80000 (AUS)
Plenty went wrong for LORD OF THE SKY at Caulfield back in Feb, that was the day in the mid 40's when they all got to the barriers ahead of schedule in the oppressive heat. He "melted" in the heat and it was reported later he was also shin-sore. His win prior was fantastic. With 51kg, on his best efforts he should win. First time down the straight may be the only query as we know it can sometimes cause problems. EIGHT BILLS hasn't won for a while but would expect him to sit back off this speed and fly home. LET'S ROCK'n'ROLL joins the might of the Weir stable, which automatically puts him in contention.
SELECTIONS – LORD OF THE SKY / EIGHT BILLS / LET’SROCK’N’ROLL
RACE 4 FLT LT PETER ARMYTAGE HANDICAP 1610m Of $80000 (AUS)
SPACECRAFT looks set for a comfortable lead and that's going to make him very hard to beat again. He's a far better horse being chased than when he is doing the chasing. Can't see why COUNT OF LIMONADE will be too far away with his good gate and I do think he can turn the tables. He gave them too much start here 1st up but he was putting in some nice work late, the 1600m will suit. PIN YOUR HOPES is a progressive horse who should relish the drop in weight. The "real" RHYTHM TO SPARE and DESERT WIZARD would test them all.
SELECTIONS – SPACECRAFT / COUNT OF LIMONADE / PIN YOUR HOPES
RACE 6 - VRC ST LEGER 2800m Of $150000
It may be THROW THE KING or ORDER OF THE SUN who take this up. Happy to tip the latter. Like most of them he's a query at the trip but he does have some class in a field like this. Thought he stuck on well in the Tulloch after having a tough run early. Blinkers come off this time too.. Fellow Sydney-sider MAJORLY might be the danger. There's not much doubt he'll stay though which is a bonus. Of the Victorians, HONEY STEEL'S GOLD has the weight edge out of the Galilee final but concede DE LITTLE ENGINE and THE TERRICKS chances out of that race.
SELECTIONS – ORDER OF THE SUN / HONEY STEELS GOLD / MAJORLY
RACE 7 - LONG TAN HANDICAP 1000m Of $80000 (AUS)
This is tough in my opinion. Despite gate 1, thought MOKORO would run well fresh. Liked what she showed at her recent jump-out. Hoping her failure last time was due to having had enough rather than not handling the straight. Despite her high weight can't knock A LITTLEBITOFCLASS. A good filly beat her last time. SENTFROMTHESTARS was an impressive maiden winner at Sale. This stable have quite a few measuring sticks as far as sprinting 3yo fillies go so have to respect their choice to be here. I am also very wary of DIAMOND FUND coming to Melbourne for this.
SELECTIONS – SENTFROMTHESTARS / A LITTLEBITOFCLASS / MOKORO
